Wordsworth and Basho: Walking Poets – launch event and exhibition in Newcastle

The launch event of the prestigious exhibition taking place at Kakimori Bunko, Itami Japan will be mirrored by a special event held simultaneously in Newcastle, England.

Students from the University of Sunderland and Northumbria University – Tom Cunningham, Mia Rawlinson, Jenny Wheatley and Rebecca Whitcombe – have curated the show.  They have gathered audio and video material recorded by artists during the creative process – some of it broadcast live using the phone app ‘Periscope’ – and brought it together to allow exhibition visitors unique access to the dialogue that developed between Japanese and British participating artists, collaborative working and the creative process.   Also on display will be images of all the finished artwork being shown at Kakimori Bunko including the manuscripts by William and Dorothy Wordsworth and Matsuo Basho. To listen to there will be sound pieces commissioned from Japanese composer Nobuya Monta and British artist Rob Strachan.

The launch event at Abject Gallery will take place 10.30 am – 3 pm on Saturday 17th September.  The highlight of the event will be at a live broadcast guided tour at 11 am of the exhibition in Kakimori Bunko by its curator, Dr Mike Collier of WALK Research Group.  There will also be a participatory art activity for guests from 11.30 – 2 pm.  All welcome!

The exhibition at Abject Gallery will continue on Sunday 18th September (12 – 5) with a drop-in art workshop 2 – 5 pm.  And then on display Monday 19th – Friday 23rd September ( 11 – 4).
